The bit about language reminds me of the classic De Camp essay/story “Language for Time Travellers”
Interesting discussion. Jaym, however, was so hard to hear/understand that it was a little annoying.
Cyberpunk has lost some of its luster. The gritty feeling of it has been absorbed into certain sub genres, but the overarching gritty, drug induced feel of early cyberpunk is gone.
First off, I want to thank Patrick for arranging for some coverage of my second-favorite genre. Fantasy is first, but cyberpunk is a close second. This episode made me want to delve deep into my pile (okay, okay, they’re neatly stacked) of cyberpunk books and see what precious gems I can find in the history of the publications.
The conversation also gave me hope of someday getting a short story in the CP genre published. I had thought it dead and gone. Maybe it had just transmogrified from what I remember reading from the great masters of classic CP.
Thanks, everyone for a great discussion!
PS: I also need to echo the sentiment of finding it hard to hear Jaym. I listen to this on my drive down the interstate at outrageous speeds…. er… I mean at the speed limit, so the background road noise makes it hard to understand some folks at some times. Either way, it was a wonderful podcast!
