Juliet McKenna’s Chronicles of the Lescari Revolution might also fall under this penumbra. She even had to change some of her plot after wargaming some of the battles and conflicts in advance with her husband.

I’ve always thought of Glen Cook’s Black Company as one of the founding members of the military fantasy genre.

Love Joe Abercrombies books. Tried reading one of Larry Correias but couldn’t wade more than a couple chapters thru his terrible writing.

If you want modern firearms and magic/monsters the best you can possibly do is Larry Correia’s Monster Hunter International series. If you want 1930′s era firearms and magic Larry Correia’s Grimnoir Chronicles is the best you can get. Nothing else holds a candle to Correia’s writing in terms of action – and you might suspect that this would result in a weak plot or characters but it’s quite the opposite. Correia is the King of Pulp.
