Also, I’m gonna be that person and notice that most of these reading lists are mostly male, with a few exceptions like Ann Leckie. A very rough estimate shows approximately two female names for every eight male names. This is a bit misleading, since there are both positive and negative ways to make the list- I think I have one female author and one male author listed for the more negative entries.

I didn’t make an effort to include more female names- I’ve noticed on my Goodreads account that I tend to read about 2/3 female authors and 1/3 male authors. So the way my reading naturally skews it was easy for me to get a list of about half and half for this meme.

I just wanted to let those who are interested in branching out a bit that there’s plenty of good stuff out there from women! And if one of your goals this year is to read more widely that way ( know some of you have said so on your blogs), or if you think that you’re gender-blind, it’s interesting to see these lists and think about natural tendencies. My intent is not to inflame, but to pique interest.

    1. Don’t think of yourself as “that person” – I did the same count myself and got 2/8, after I posted my list (and, after reading your post, I wondered if I should wrap my head in tin foil :-). I could reasonably have done a couple of ‘swaps’ in my answers, so I vote agreement to your sentiment.

    2. This is a very good point. It is important to look at our biases in reading to be aware of what we are missing out on and what that might say about us. If one only reads male authors (and mostly male protagonists), one should question why.
I would extend this to authors of color as well. Do I read black writers? Asians writers? What about protagonists? If they are people of color, is the author? It shouldn’t be a surprise that a female black Nigerian is going to have an entirely different world view than a male white Irishman. This informs his/her writing. One might write authoritatively about the other but they still with lack that personal perspective.
Best thing I did all year was start to actively seek out books by authors of color. I kept looking at reviews and seeing books touted about how genre changing and innovative they were and in the end those books really weren’t that different from previous works. It wasn’t until I took a good look at who was writing those books and started to seek out writers who had a different world view than my own that I started to find books that were truly different from what I’ve been reading for the past 20 odd years. That was very exciting.

    3. I’m absolutely psyched for the Women Destroy Scifi issue of Lightspeed coming out later this year.

I’d say around 80 percent of my reading list is female actually, which I think is super awesome. However, in realizing most of my reading list were female authors I’ve tried to focus on some male authors last year.

One thing I’ve noticed is I have book cover bias that I only started to realize by SF Signal’s columns about comparing book covers on new books. I’ve found that I completely judge a book by its cover and won’t even think twice about a book that has a cover that I deem to be not my type of novel. For example, I’ll consider a book cover and get the “supernatural” vibe from it but will be something completely different.

This year I’m trying to force myself outside of my comfort zone, which for me varies between author preference, cover preference, and even the type of books I read. I have narrowed myself down too much to be too picky, and I’m sure I’m missing a lot of great titles just because I hate werewolves, or dragons, or epic fantasy or something else. The only exception will be horror novels because I get too many nightmares :D

    1. Glad to see some love for Christopher Priest, Andy Duncan and Howard Waldrop. I’m about half way thru the Ballard(read most of these back in the 60’s). It’s large size makes for cumbersome reading. The Gene Wolfe is on my reread list. Wasn’t crazy about Redshirts either. Hated the Ann Leckie but I seem to be in the minority.

      1. I’ve read some great “genre” books last year, including Life After Life by Kate Atkinson, Land Across by Gene Wolfe, A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar, Wakulla Springs by Andy Duncan and Ellen Klages (just a novella, but one of the best I’ve read for a long time), Jack Glass by Adam Roberts, some older stuff for my column as Reamy’s Blind Voices, Galouye, Katherine MacLean, Margaret ST. Clair and some others. All in all very good reading year. My list would’ve been at least 50 books long.

      1. I read the original trilogy as stand alone novels as they came out. I eventually lost them during various moves etc. One of the first (what I consider to be) military SF stories I read.

        1. I think the fact that they sound like military SF is what piqued my interest. I’ve been reading more and more military SF over the last three or four years and am liking it.

    1. Glad to see some love for Barlough-he rarely even gets reviewed. Also that I’m not the only one who didn’t like Ancillary Justice.

      1. It’s been a long time since I read the first two Barlough books. I wonder if I can track down more of the series. A pity they aren’t available as ebooks

  37. A quick eyeball scroll through all the titles listed here seems to show that Mark Lawrence’s Broken Empire Trilogy gets the most mentions for Fantasy, with most favoring the books. And in SF Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice gets mixed reviews veering towards positive.

  38. The last sf/f/h book I read and liked was: Natural History of
Dragons, Marie Brennan (a beautifullu done book, tone perfect.)

The last sf/f/h book I read and wasn’t crazy about was: Ocean at
the end of the Lane, Neil Gaiman (It’s a story I have a sneaking
suspicion that if anyone other than Neil Gaiman had submitted to a Big
Six publisher for their consideration would have been returned by the
next outgoing mail. It feels like there’s something deeply personal in
here, yes, but it also feels like it was skated over – and that ocean
    really WAS just that pond…)

The sf/f/h book I am reading now is: Hild, Nicola Griffith (well
okay it’s supposedly HISTORICAL but it;s far enough in teh past for
there to be a shade of fantasy about the history…)

    The sf/f/h book(s) I most want to read next is/are: Freedom’s
Maze, Delia Sherman (look forward to this one…)

An underrated sf/f/h book is: Havenstar by Glenda Larke (One of
Glenda’s best. And she is a good writer – look up her other books,
too. And as for flying under the radar… you might glance at one or
    two of mine… )

An overrated sf/f/h book is: Game of Thrones, GRR Martin (I kind
of get overwhelmed by it all – the cast of thousands, teh wars, th
violence – yes, there is real imagination here but it’s being
stretched very very thin over the subject matter…)

The last sf/f/h book that was recommended to me was: too many SF/F
writer friends who are giving me lists. WOn’t pick just one.

A sf/f/h book I recommended to someone else was: Tigana, Guy
Gavriel Kay I tell EVERYONE about this book. It is sublime.

    years ago to be sure.)
