13 thoughts on “Say Hello to the 420 Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Books Coming Out in July”

  1. Is there a special set of blinders I could wear that would block out sight of the Centipede Press offerings? Because they keep putting out books that I really, really want, but then I look at the price (even with a healthy Amazon discount) and burst into tears. (Not really. Close, though.)

Might R.A. Lafferty be as well-known today as he ought to be if his work was available in more-affordable editions? (I submit for consideration that OKLA HANNALI should be at or near the top of any list of “American Fantasy”.)

  2. It’s funny how all these sff books come out, and yet the same half a dozen people win most of the awards.

  3. tam–
I think that a large part of that is momentum and name recognition. Hugo and Nebula voters are not obligated or able to read everything under the sun, and they can only vote for things they’ve heard of. A lot of them would pick up a book/short story sight unseen that was written by a previous Hugo nominee. There’s some reasonable strategy behind that–if a writer has blown your socks off before, they’re more likely to do the same than a random name from a huge list. But it does tend to result in repeated names because being nominated once makes people more likely to read their works which makes them more likely to be nominated again etc…

And that’s not even taking into account readers that nominate their favorite author’s works even if that reader hasn’t read that particular work–that I find very annoying.

But, despite all that, I think there’s evidence that the votes ARE getting spread around to more people than in previous years. Last year the Hugo Short Story category was only 3 stories, this year only 4. The reason neither was five is that some of the nominees got less than 5% of the votes and the Hugo rules state that means they can’t be on the ballot. That means that the votes must be spreading thinner, which implies that more distinct works are being nominated. In general that’s a good thing! Having less stories on the ballot is less of a good thing, so I’m hoping they’ll change the rules to just keep the top 5 with tiebreakers regardless of the percentage of total votes.

  4. Have asked before. How do books get on this list? I know five release by my publisher last month that weren’t on the SF Signal list. How do we get on it?

    1. You aren’t being intentionally left out. I find the books mainly by trolling Amazon. You have no book listed for July, so you’re not in this month’s roundup. Even so, they are not comprehensive. I do the best I can, but there are *lots* of books and I’m bound to miss some.

      1. No that’s cool, we were all in June and managed to sneak past your eagle eye.

Be nice to make something, particularly as the book featured in a Mindmeld article for SFSignal in 2013.

  5. How–HOW I SAY–can so many people in the world get by without reading books when there is so much awesomeness being published in one month alone?
