On My Radar: NEMESIS GAMES (EXPANSE) by James S.A. Corey, DAMNATION by Jean Johnson, THE GRACE OF KINGS by Ken Liu

With so many books that I already want to read, I’m not quite sure why I get so excited to learn about even more books that I want to read coming on the horizon. It’s like someone offering you a glass of water when you’re already drinking from a fire hose. Nevertheless, I still get a bit giddy when I learn of tasty, new tomes.

Here’s a slew of forthcoming books on my radar…

Nemesis Games (EXPANSE Series) by James S.A. Corey
(Orbit | Summer 2015 | Cover illustration artist: Daniel Dociu; Designer: Kirk Benshoff)

SYNOPSIS:

Not available yet, not even a hint from Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck (who write together as the pseudonymous James S.A. Corey)

WHY IT’S ON MY RADAR:
Corey’s Expanse series is one of my recent great reading fails. Everyone tells me how good this series is and I’ve yet to read book 1. And here comes book 5!

(Saga Press | April 7, 2015 | Cover illustration artist: unknown)

SYNOPSIS:

Two men rebel together against tyranny—and then become rivals—in this first sweeping book of an epic fantasy series from Ken Liu, recipient of Hugo, Nebula, and World Fantasy awards.

Wily, charming Kuni Garu, a bandit, and stern, fearless Mata Zyndu, the son of a deposed duke, seem like polar opposites. Yet, in the uprising against the emperor, the two quickly become the best of friends after a series of adventures fighting against vast conscripted armies, silk-draped airships, and shapeshifting gods. Once the emperor has been overthrown, however, they each find themselves the leader of separate factions—two sides with very different ideas about how the world should be run and the meaning of justice.

Fans of intrigue, intimate plots, and action will find a new series to embrace in the Dandelion Dynasty.

WHY IT’S ON MY RADAR:
My sf/f reading leans heavily towards sf. I don’t dislike fantasy, but the stars have to align just right. Part of that is being choosy about stories and authors. Ken Liu is a fantastic short fiction author and I’m quite anxious to see how he handles the long form.

Damnation by Jean Johnson
(Ace | November 25, 2014 | Cover illustration artist: unknown)

SYNOPSIS:

It began with a terrible vision of the future. Compelled by her precognitive abilities, Ia must somehow save her home galaxy long after she’s gone. Now Jean Johnson presents the long-awaited epic conclusion to her national bestselling military science fiction series…

With their new ship claimed and new crewmembers being collected, Ia’s Damned are ready and willing to re-enter the fight against the vicious, hungry forces of their Salik foes. But shortly after they board the Damnation to return to battle, a new threat emerges. After several centuries of silence, the Greys are back, and the Alliance must now combat both a rapacious, sadistic enemy, and a terrifying, technologically superior foe.

Ia has asked nothing of her crew that she herself has not been willing to give. But with two wars to bring to an end—and time running out—Ia must make and execute the most terrible choice of all…

WHY IT’S ON MY RADAR:
I’ve already some of the books in this series and enjoyed them. I’m currently only 1 book behind…which I better read soon because here comes a new one! Johnson’s series has action, intrigue, a bit of romance, and despite the precognitive abilities of it’s tough protagonist, unpredictable.

  1. Another Expanse novel. Wow. I’m way behind on the series, having only finished the first one, but I have been buying them as they come out and so this will be purchased on publication. I just have to get reading on the others. Considering how long it’s been since I read that first one, I may have to re-read it before I tackle No. 2. Now I have a convenient deadline: June 2015.

  2. same here, I’ve read Leviathan Wakes, but really need to get on to the next one.

and cover art for Damnation is undoubtedly Gene Mollica, as with the earlier covers.

  3. Just finished the latest “Theirs Not To Reason Why” last night. Can’t wait to see how she wraps up the series.

I’m loving “The Expanse” series too. I it’s my current favorite series. I’m all caught up on the main novels. I’m excited for the TV show, all the upcoming books.

I used to enjoy fantasy as much as SF, but I think I OD’d on it at one point and I have little interest in fantasy settings – still a bit, but but not much.

  4. The Expanse is easily my favourite book series. I’m wary of the upcoming TV Series, but it has Thomas Jane, so I’m in.

I love that each book comes out in a reasonable timeframe, so the story stays fresh. Not the 5+ year waits in between books that some authors have.
