Long Beach Comic Con is coming!

It will be held on Saturday, September 12 and Sunday September 13 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Tickets are available now through the website www.longbeachcomiccon.com.

The Long Beach Comic Con guest list is amazingly diverse, with more than 150 creators from David Petersen (who will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of MOUSE GUARD), Adam Kubert (who is making his first appearance at a Long Beach Show) the entire Man of Action team (Duncan Rouleau, Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, and Steven T. Seagle), Marc Guggenheim (ARROW) and Tara Butters (Marvel Entertainment’s AGENT CARTER), Michele Fazekas and Kris Anka (CAPTAIN MARVEL), Christos Gage and Ruth Fletcher Gage (Marvel’s DAREDEVIL), STAR WARS artists Stuart and Kathryn Immonen, STAR WARS and YA novelist Cecil Castellucci, all ages creators like Mike Kunkel (HEROBEAR) and Stan Sakai (USAGI YOJIMBO), legendary artist Art Adams and legendary writer Marv Wolfman, Image Comics creators like Brian Buccellato, Joe Harris, Jimmie Robinson, Kyle Higgins, Dustin Ngyuen and Richard Starkings and actress Maitlind Ward Baxter.

One of the highlights of this year’s convention is the Shades & Shadows reading series, which focuse exclusively on dark fiction. Each event showcases works of dark fantasy, horror, science fiction, noir, and other forms of dark, speculative literature. They are bringing together a blend of authors to read live from their own works.

Here’s the panel lineup:

Shades & Shadows Reading Series
Body Issues in Genre Fiction

PANELISTS: Michael Paul Gonzalez, Cecil Castellucci, Gallagher Lawson, Christa Faust, Sherri L. Smith, Samuel Sattin

Genre fiction offers authors interesting and exciting ways to explore the idea of difference in terms of bodies and the construction of masculinity and femininity, and it only gets weirder when nonhumans get thrown into the mix! In this panel, we’ll deconstruct the notion of “normal” bodies.

LGBT Issues in Genre Fiction

PANELISTS: Martin Pousson, Sheri Lewis Wohl, Maureen McHugh, Gallagher Lawson, Sean Abley, Xach Fromson

How many main characters in genre fiction can you name who land somewhere on the LGBT spectrum of identities? Let’s tackle issues of representation in real life and on the page. In worlds where anything is possible, how can we use the tools of genre fiction to create a more inclusive universe?

Shades & Shadows LIVE Show

PANELISTS: Samuel Sattin, Cecil Castellucci, Chris Farnsworth, Richard Kadrey, Sherri L. Smith Xach Fromson, Lauren Candia

Shades & Shadows is the only reading series in Los Angeles that focuses exclusively on dark fiction. We love dark fantasy, horror, science fiction, noir, you name it. Each event brings a blend of six debuting, emerging, or established authors together, each of whom will read for approximately seven minutes from their own works. They will delight and terrify you, making you squirm in your seat and raising the hairs upon your necks. You may get to hear excerpts from stories that haven’t yet been published, or from novels you haven’t yet discovered, or you might hear a favorite piece from a collection or novel you love and cherish. Our aim is to give you, the readers, an opportunity to explore new authors and expand your dark horizons.

The Controversy of Sexual Violence in Genre Fiction

PANELISTS: Samuel Sattin, Maria Alexander, Michael Paul Gonzalez, John Skipp, Mere Smith, Heather Lyons, Lauren Candia, Xach Fromson

Is it just us, or is there a whole lot of violence against women being portrayed across all mediums of genre fiction? When one in three women will experience violence in their lives, how do we break silence and reflect the reality of women everywhere in a way that is respectful?
