PURGE: Sins of Science

What’s it about?

Build futuristic super weapons, nightmarish machines & harness the power to destroy stars in the 1st Real Time Strategy card game.

Why it’s interesting: Well well, here’s something you don’t see everyday. A card game attempting to mimic the real time strategy genre of video games, in a SF setting no less. Some interesting things about the game: it’s more living card game (a la Fantasy Flight Games’ card games) than a CCG like Magic; there are no hands of cards, players are able to search their decks for the cards they need, subject to the resource requirements needed to play them; the art is appealing; the game is done, Nova Forge is looking for the backing to publish the game. I applaud the attempt to try something new in card gaming, but I’m not sure how this really plays. The game play videos on the site are very dry and don’t really give me a feel for the game. Still, in an era where Kickstarter games usually cost $50+ to get a copy of the game, $35 doesn’t seem so bad.

Beyond The Sun -Science Fiction Anthology

What’s it about?

A scifi anthology of twenty stories by authors new and established about space colonists interacting with alien planets and peoples.

Why it’s interesting: An anthology dedicated to space colonization sounds pretty good to me. For only $10, you get an ebook and for $18 you get the paperback. With only 4 days left, there’s not much time left to reach the goal so pledge if you’re interested! Full disclosure: Bryan Thomas Schmidt has been known to blog for SF Signal.

Sea Breeze Lane Hardcover Graphic Novel

What’s it about?

It is several hundred years in the future and humanity lives on the moon, in domed Earth-like cities. David Bell is a Skyborn, one of his society’s elite and their next leader. David grew up on fairy tales, like any other child. Except, his bedtime stories about strange and distant lands may actually be much more than simple fantasy. Outside of the domes, on the Moon’s harsh atmosphere, nothing like the one we know today, reside the antagonistic Dusters; this group believes they are descended from the original lunar settlers. David has started to question the secrecy of his society and doubts the dogma preached by its past leaders. He is determined to know the truth and is willing to risk his life to find it. David’s journey to uncover meaning could lead his world to a brighter future or completely destroy it…

Why it’s interesting: A secretive, dogmatic society based on the Moon where Earth is taboo sounds like an interesting story and from what I’ve seen I also like the art direction. $5 gets you a PDF of Issue 1 while $30 gets you all 5 chapters in PDF and the hardcover itself.

A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex

What’s it about?

Your guide to the sexy side of steampunk, covering everything from kinky Victorian sexuality to contemporary subcultural sex.

Why it’s interesting: If you like your steampunk extra steamy, then you’ll probably want to check out A Steampunk’s Guide to Sex. The book covers both Victorian and contemporary sexuality, such as DIY floggers made with bike tubes, steam-powered vibrators and Victorian aphrodisiacs. And best of all it promises plenty of illustrations “with steamy modern photos shot with the historical tintype process.” For $12, you get a print copy of the book.

Let’s Build a Goddamn Tesla Museum

What’s it about?

It’s a goddamn museum for Nikola Tesla.

Why it’s interesting: The goddamn museum is going to be built. More than $1 million has been raised and there’s still a month to go in the campaign. They were initially asking for $850,000 to buy back Tesla’s old laboratory, known as the Wardenclyffe Tower, and turn it into a museum. As the non-profit points out, “There is no Tesla museum in the United States, despite Tesla’s extraordinary accomplishments.” Thomas Edison has at least four museums. So let’s build another three goddam Tesla museums.

What’s it about?

A romantic comedy directed by Michael Dorn and starring Star Trek actors

Why it’s interesting: It’s Worf in a romantic comedy with Deanna Troi, Quark and Colonel Kira. How can you not support that? Well, it’s not really Worf, Troi, et al., of course. It’s Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, Armin Shimerman and Nana Visitor, as well as Anne Marie Johnson — showing that they can do more than SF. It would be awesome to see this kind of thing catch on — wouldn’t you love to see the cast of Firefly in a telenovela or the stars of Battlestar Galactica in an episode of Portlandia? Wait, that really happened.
