Ray Bradbury May Have Passed Away, but His Stories Remain Forever

by Jason Strangis

I thought Ray Bradbury was going live forever. I really did!

So imagine my surprise when I heard that one of the all-time greats of the literary field died on June 5, 2012, at a mere 91 years of age. Well, if the incomparable Ray Bradbury wasn’t going to live forever, I thought he would at least make it to 100.

Alas, no person can escape death, not even the legends.

LEGENDS Anthology To Celebrate The Life and Work of Acclaimed Fantasy Author David Gemmell

A new David Gemmell tribute anthology is coming from NewCon Press in October.

From the press release:

This year sees the fifth running of the David Gemmell Awards for Fantasy, and to mark this special occasion a new anthology, ‘Legends‘, will be released from NewCon Press. Newcon is one of the UK’s most acclaimed independent presses, and will be releasing ‘Legends‘ at the end of October.

Legends‘ gathers together a collection of tales from modern fantasy authors paying homage to the work of one of the greatest fantasy writers of all time, David Gemmell. Gemmell passed away in 2006, and was the author of 30 novels, including his highly successful debut Legend and classics such as Waylander and Morningstar. The ‘Legends’ anthology features new stories from a host of the field’s leading talent, including Joe Abercrombie, James Barclay, Storm Constantine, Tanith Lee, Juliet E McKenna, Anne Nicholls, Stan Nicholls, Jan Siegel, Adrian Tchaikovsky and many more.

Legends‘ will be launched as part of the World Fantasy Convention at Brighton’s Metropole hotel on the 31st October, the same day as the David Gemmell Awards for Fantasy prizegiving ceremony. Many of the authors included within the anthology will be on hand to sign the book at the event, as well as cover artist Dominic Harman.

Ian Whates, Publisher and Editor at NewCon Press said: ‘As a long-standing fan of David Gemmell’s work, I was thrilled when asked to compile and edit an anthology in his honour. The book was a pleasure to work on and the response from authors very gratifying; there are some great stories in here, as there would have to be to justify putting David Gemmell’s name on the cover.’

Stan Nicholls, Chair for the Gemmell Awards said: ‘The really gratifying thing about Legends is that some of the most accomplished writers in the fantasy field have so freely given their time and talent to the project. We’re immensely grateful to them, and genuinely excited by the prospect of publishing what we believe will be an outstanding anthology.’

[GUEST POST] Just Doing His Job: A Tribute to Neil Armstrong by Mike Poole

Mike Poole is a part-time system administrator, part-time bookkeeper, full-time heavy box toter working in the backwoods of South Carolina. He spends his free time reading science fiction and trying to get this Facebook monkey off his back.

I don’t remember whose post I saw first. There were several, all saying basically the same thing. It was a lazy Saturday and I’d decided to put off the weekly mowing until Sunday, opting for a nap instead. I woke up late afternoon, grabbed a cup of coffee, and logged into Facebook for a quick meme fix. Instead, I got the news that Neil Armstrong was dead. I got as far as the first headline, then I started to cry and I just sat there and cried for a while.

I guess I should feel embarrassed and keep that to myself, a grown man sitting alone at his desk, crying like a little baby about the death of someone far away. It’s not like I knew him, not really, anyway. I never saw him in person or got to shake his hand. All I knew of him was the same PR published over and over throughout the years with ever decreasing regularity, a Wikipedia entry waiting for its final update. He was decades out of the public eye, famous for something many no longer think important enough to fuss over, some think never really happened, and even he felt was inappropriately focused on him. And yet, I don’t feel embarrassed at all. Not even just a little.

This is My Boomstick! An Animated Tribute To Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead” Films

Daniel Kanemoto has put together this fantastic animated tribute to Sam Raimi’s Evil Dead films. Says the filmmaker:

This is my cinematic love letter to three influential movies that made me want to be a filmmaker: EVIL DEAD, EVIL DEAD 2, and ARMY OF DARKNESS.
I created all the artwork in the sequence, but the final image is directly inspired by an incredible EVIL DEAD poster created by Olly Moss. The moment I saw it, I only wanted to see it move – which is how I feel about all great posters. The new wave of artists working with Mondo have made movie posters worth collecting again, and that’s a great thing. I hope to someday join their ranks.

The Olly Moss poster is shown here. (There are plenty more awesome posters at the artist’s website.)

Here’s Kanemoto’s trailer.
