Where the heck did this come from?

I’m not a movie maven by any stretch, but I usually keep up on the SF related movies. Well, Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow got past me somehow. Check out that trailer! Its got it all! Ornithopters! Zeppelins! P-40s! Giant robots! Art deco! 1930’s SF style!

Whew. It looks really cool. In fact, it sort of reminds me of Last Exile in its look, and that’s not a bad thing to me. They are obviously going for the Pulp SF/1930’s serial feel and I think, from the trailer, they nailed it. Sort of a juiced-up

Indiana Jones.

From reading the messages in the IMDB section for it, it looks like the CGI was being rendered before and during principle photography. That means the actors had to work in front of blue screens. Which is ok, because as you may have noticed from the trailers, the film has a sepia/black-and-white feel to it which should serve to blend the CGI in better. And don’t we all think of the 1930s and ’40s as being in black and white? There may be a few points off for the story, but several millions points for cool.

The only downside I see is that Angelina Jolie and her lips are in the film. Hopefully the movie won’t try to take itself seriously and will play up the pulp factor. I’m looking forward to this movie now. Bonus plus: No Ben Afflack!

  1. If you’re looking at Angelina Jolie’s lips and are bothered by them, then I would say that you’re not looking at the right body part…try a bit lower…just below her neck, between her arms, above her stomach…

The Tomb Raider movies are pretty bad, but at least she’s bouncy and perky…
