Marvel Sues Arch-Villain NCSoft

Marvel is suing NCSoft stating that it allows the game to create characters that are too similar to its own comic book characters. My question – so what?!

  1. Marvel is just a freaking whiner. If it weren’t for Spiderman, they would be out of business now, this wouldn’t be an issue anymore. This would be the perfect opportunity for DC Comics to come in and do some licensing deal with NCSoft so everyone will want to use DC characters. That should put the final nail in the Marvel coffin!

    Everyone go buy DC Comics!

Here is something from the great sage, Matt Groening…

Bart: Wow, Stan Lee came back??

Comic Book Guy: No, Stan Lee never left. I’m starting to think that Stan Lee’s mind is no longer in mint condition…

  2. I know I also saw that PVP was poking fun at this whole thing as well. My feeling on it is that it relatively silly to sue so long after launch when anybody could have spent some time trying the game out and seeing where the infringments are. They pretty much allow you to make a character that looks like any Comic Book hero (to which I say to the comic book folks that maybe they ought to pay attention to these things sometimes).

But in thier defense, those characters are thier creation. Like them or not, they belong to Marvel or DC or Image or whoever. I think that NCSoft really blew it when they didnt go out and contact these companies for an okey dokey in writing. As soon as COH became successful, one of these companies were going to sue. Its too tempting, but I am surprised it was Marvel and not a smaller outfit who would gain so much more from something like this.

Basically as long as we live in a society where we find litigation to be a viable route for making money – folks will sue over things like this.

  3. There may be a silver lining in this after all, it will certainly put to stop to this!

  4. Apparently noone referenced this regarding the evil empire known as Marvel Comics.

  5. Um… I did Pete – read my post and you will see I said something just not linked it…

Stupid thing is it cost them no money. If anything it lets the people playing continue on with the hero on their mind and i’d say more likely to buy the comics.

DC is raising any ruckus cause they have smarter lead guys who know A)its doing no harm and B)they are preventing blatant Superman named characters from existing. (Though my uberman never got changed)

  8. To quote the great sage, Nelson Muntz: “Ha ha!”
