POLL RESULTS: I’m a SF/F Fanboy!

Here are the results of the latest SF Signal poll.

Are you a science fiction or fantasy fanboy or fangirl?

(43 total votes)

What surprises is me is not that the majority of our readers are fanboys, but that they admit to being so. This shows an admirable level of self-awareness considering many (not us!) use the term in a derogatory way. To those who voted “no”, take it from a former fanboy-in-denial: you are. For those who voted “I don’t know”, read up on it and and take comfort among your brothers and sisters: you are too. πŸ™‚

Be sure to vote in this week’s poll on book remainders!

Nothing is impossible, even that you will one day watch episode III and like it! πŸ˜‰

All a matter of definition. Had you asked it earlier I may have even answered the poll with a yes. But after that nice post you gave with “They cover the essential comics, sci-fi movies, Hong Kong movies and horror movies one would need to consume to be considered a fanboy.“, it became rather difficult.
I read lots of SF and Fantasy, but also plenty of historical novels, thrillers on their various genres, and so on. Comics, though, I hardly ever read, nothing beyond Sandman, The Books of Magic, V for Vendetta long before it became a movie idea, and that’s about it. No Hong-Kong movies (that I know of), and very few horror movies. Not to mention no anime at all, which they were supposed to cover in a later article…
Oh, and I really didn’t like Close Encounters and The Wrath of Khan. Or, as the previous commenter, SW Episode III (Though it was better than II).
And as for the (current) Wikipedia definition you point to from here “Fanboy or fanboi is a term used to describe an individual who is utterly devoted to a single subject or hobby, often to the point where it is considered an obsession.” , well, I take great pride in being a rather indifferent guy who isn’t utterly devoted to anything or have anything at a level that can be justifiably called an obsession. Though I do admit that latter point may be, actually was, contested by small-time readers the first time they see my book collection. But still.

  4. I voted don’t know. I like to think I am not totally obsessed with sci fi. I prefer it to other genres and like to think I am a self-taught student of its history. But I don’t care for fantasy, horror, amine, comics, etc. But mainly I like to think I can talk about other topics even if I’d prefer not to. Wait, I am not sure if I am helping my case or not. I just don’t know. And since most of my friends don’t know what a fanboy is, I have never been called one.

  5. Well it was an anymonous poll. If you asked him in the flesh in a room full of hot chicks I’d have given a less honest and more nuanced answer.
