    To quote Blaschke:

“Battlestar Galactica, at its best, succeeds for the same reasons the original Star Trek holds up so well today–it functions as an effective allegory of complex moral issues facing contemporary society.”

What? SF can’t have moral issues without being allegorical?

Fandom really needs to put this assumption to task. It is now accepted in the mainstream that SF can only be literate if it holds a mirror up to modern society, which is pure horseshit. But fandom just nods its collective head and is grateful for any attention paid to the genre.

Thank you. I have never agreed with this belief either, and it irritates me every time I see it repeated. SF should not have to limit itself to being thinly-disguised commentary on current events.

  3. JB, the thing that annoys me is when the mainstream embraces an SF author, like Dick or LeGuin, or even some Atwood, they go out of their way to say “oh, this isn’t really science fiction.”

    Idiots.

    Grumble grumble.
