SF Tidbits for 4/26/08
- Artists Bob Eggleton shows off two fantastic covers that he worked on: Shadow of the Scorpion by Neal Asher and a reprint of Heinlein’s Farmer in the Sky.
- Free Fiction: “Maps of the Bible” by Jason Sanford (who links to more of his stories).
- Lou Anders shares his thoughts on Science Fiction Film & Television, spurred on by the Popular Mechanics article on Hollywood Sci-Fi’s Bronze Age. “It wouldn’t be hard to make a list of 100 smart SF films and another list of 100 dumb ones; and the smart ones aren’t necessarily the good ones and the dumb ones not necessarily the bad ones.”
- Editor Jonathan Strahan updates us on all the projects he is currently juggling. I don’t know which one is more juicy: Godlike Machines, Eclipse Two, Wild Thyme, Green Magic: Stories by Jack Vance, The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year: Volume 3, The New Space Opera 2, Dreamtime: Legends of Australian Fantasy, Eclipse Three and The Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year: Volume 4. Wow!
- Nick Mamatas asks: What is Fantatwee? as he talks about the slush pile at Clarkesworld Magazine. “Fantatwee is fantasy with an ellipsis; the implications of the story and its themes are omitted so that the act of reading — and, I suspect, writing — is mostly purely palliative.” [via Andrew Wheeler]
- Time Traveler Show #26 features a tribute to Arthur C. Clarke.
- Over at SciFiRama, Boris was impressed with a book signing by Richard Morgan.
- The Times Online lists Lisa Tuttle’s Top 6 Arthur C. Clarke Award Winners. Sadly, I’ve read none of these…(Looks at JP.) [via Lit Lists]
- Quite a few genre books make the Telegraph‘s list of the 50 best cult books. [via Bookninja and When Gravity Fails]
- In case anyone thought Hollywood was heading in the right direction, I offer this bit of surreal news: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson voices the lead character in an upcoming animated SF comedy called Planet 51 which Johnson describes as a “reverse E.T.”
- Slice of SciFi lists The 7 Most Embarrassing Moments in Science Fiction.
- Omigod – Dusty Abell has created an amazing Classic Saturday Morning Cartoon Characters Drawing and has triggered memories I didn’t even knew I had. And some I wish I didn’t! (What the hell was young Billy Batson doing driving around with some creepy old guy in his camper?) [via Chris Roberson]
