  • Those crazy people over at Carnegie Mellon University have gone and done something seriously cool. Facial recognition software has been around for awhile, usually used to pick someone’s face out in a crowd. But no more! Now with the new ‘face mining’ software, users will be able to achieve a new level of interaction with their favorite videos. And what better show to use a proof of concept than Star Trek? Be sure to play around with the results the CMU guys obtained by running various Trek episodes through the face mine. Very cool. [H/T Gizmodo]
  • We’ve reported before that Robert J. Sawyer’s really cool novel, Flashforward, is being turned into a potential series for ABC, most likely to start next year. It seems the viral ad campaign will kick off this Wednesday during LOST‘s 100th episode. If you watch, you’ll see some mystery ad spots that might, just might, direct you to a web site that has something to do with the new show. I’ll be watching, but then again, I always watch LOST, this will make me skip the commercials slower to see the mystery spots.
  • Babylon 5‘s J. Michael Straczynski will be the second annual Julius Schwartz Lecture, err, lecturer on May 22nd at MIT. If you go, let us know how it is!
  • Gateworld has a nice, long interview with Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper about the upcoming Stargate Universe TV series. They’re already shooting episode 5. I’m on the fence here about this one, but I’ll certainly give it a looksee. Hopefully I won’t have to know anything about the previous incarnations.
  • Sorry Heroes fans, looks like you’ll have at least 5 less episodes to kick around for next season as NBC has cut the number it wants to produce. Is this the death knell for the show?
  • The May issue of Wired magazine is all about J.J. Abrams and his new movie you may have heard about, Star Trek. I don’t usually read Wired but I might read this one.
  • Joss Whedon is this year’s winner of the Bradbury Award for excellence in screenwriting from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. Now you can view his acceptance speech!

  1. I’m afraid that any renewal of Heroes for next year is actually the death knell for Chuck.
