Stargate SG-1 Watchathon – ‘Children of the Gods, Pt. 1’

I know a lot of people like Stargate SG-1, but I’ve never been a big fan. Way back when it originally aired on Showtime, I was unable to watch it until it went on syndication and when I was able to see it, I was underwhelmed by the first few episodes. Heck, I was underwhelmed with the original Stargate movie as well. In any case, I never went back to SG-1, even when it went to Sci Fi. They must have done something right as it ran for 10 seasons then spawned the Stargate Atlantis series and now Stargate Universe is premiering in October.

Even though I have it on good authority that viewers of Universe don’t need to know any of the SG-1 background, I decided to start from the beginning. When I saw that Hulu has the first 4 seasons available, I was struck with the idea that there was just enough time to watch all of the 4 season’s episodes before Universe starts. So that’s what we’re going to do here. We’ll be posting an episode a day, starting with the pilot “Children of the Gods, Pt.1” and running through the end of September. As Universe is rumored to start on October 3rd, we’ll end just in time for the new series to start. And we may have a surprise in September that will involve our readers so stay tuned.

Welcome to the Stargate SG-1 Watchathon! Stick around, watch with us and then comment on each episode you watch. If you’re already a fan, let us know what you think as well. If Hulu decides to add more seasons, we may continue on, but at a reduced rate. And yes, Hulu is U.S. only, sadly. I’m not telling you how, but a little investigation on Google could help you find these episodes online if you’d like to watch a long.

And now, “Children of the Gods, Pt. 1”:

  1. I actually found SG1 like you did – via sindication and then when it was on SCIFI – though I saw it all out of order for the most part. Feel in love with it from the first few episodes I saw even though I don’t know what episodes I saw first. 🙂

Jack has always been my favorite! Love his sarcasm and the way he always looks out for his team. Daniel tended to drive me nuts in the first few seasons – a bit to arrogant and full of himself, but I think he gets better after a while. Sam is awesome as is Teal’c. And General Hammond remains the best leader Stargate has ever known.

I hope you end up liking it at least a little! I do think that the first season isn’t as good as the rest as it took a bit of time for the show to really find its feet and take off.

  2. Jen,

I’m almost to the end of season 2 and there have been some really good episodes and some not so good ones. For the most part, when it’s good, it’s really good, but it isn’t consistently good, hence I’m still kind of wishy-washy about it. However, I’m still going to stick it out.

As far as characters go, I really like O’Neill, mostly because he reminds me of how myself or a certain Tim at SF Signal HQ would act and I really like General Hammond. Too bad Mr. Davis passes away, he brings a certain gravitas to the role that balances out O’Neill’s sarcastic demeanor.

There’s a couple episodes(*ahem* Emancipation) that aren’t terribly good, or just plain bad. For the most part though I’ve really enjoyed the show and look forward to SGU. I jumped in midway through season 6 and I’ve been watching ever since.

So stick with it, once you really start watching you’ll realize why it’s popular.
