Stargate SG-1 Watchathon – ‘Deadman Switch’ (S03E07)

Description: While on a mission to recover a UAV, SG1 are captured by a Bounty Hunter working for evil System Lord Sokar. He tells them there is a bounty on their capture, but offers to let them go if they help him capture a Goa’uld.

On first glance, I wasn’t too thrilled about the description for this episode. SG-1 encounters a bounty hunter? Meh. But after watching it, I have to say this is one of the better episodes of Stargate so far. The story itself is decent, if a bit contrived, but what raises this one above the other episodes is the bounty hunter, Aris Boch, played convincingly well by Sam Jones (who played Flash “Ahh ahh!” Gordon in the 1980 movie of the same name).

Boch is a clever, conniving, ruthless, irreverent and sarcastic mercenary who’ll do anything to get the job done. In this case, to bring back an escaped Goa’uld to System Lord Sokar, and maybe SG-1 as well. Jones steals every scene he’s in, playing Boh with a gruff glee that is actually quite fun to watch. He also outdoes O’Neill in the ‘best lines’ department. Which makes his final decision seem all the more contrived, just a way to get SG-1 out of his clutches and back on their own.

Still, even with the letdown of the ending, this is one of the few episodes I could watch again. Good stuff!

One more thought: I think this episode works so well because the writers were going with a much more humorous approach to the story. This lightness helps to gloss over the weaker points of the story.

Best Lines:

[After being captured by Boch and left on his ship.]

Carter – “Sir, he’s not Goa’uld.”

Jack O’Neill – “And? But? So? Therefore?”

[Aris talks with SG-1 in the cargo hold of his ship.]

Boch – “Captain, you must have some medical training.”

Carter – “Actually, I’m a Major now.”

Boch – “Oh! Well, how very important. I’ll inform the galaxy. Can you get over here now and help me, Major?”

[Just a bit later.]

Boch – “Well, uh, Teal’c is worth the most. The, uh, System Lords would love to make a good example of him. And Carter here, well, she has the memories of the Tok’ra Jolinar. And you, O’Neill, you’re considered…Well, you’re a pain in the nikta.”

O’Neill – “Neck?”

Teal’c – “No.”
