Apparently Lewis Carrol’s Alice in Wonderland is really big at the moment as both Tim Burton and SyFy will be releasing their own re-imaginings of Carrol’s classic work. It’s time for an old fashioned, no holds barred smackdown!
First up, SyFy’s extended trailer for Alice, their mini-series take which premieres on Dec. 6th at 9/8C. Brought to you by the same team behind the underrated Tin Man mini-series, Alice looks to ‘update’ Alice’s story for a new audience. It also lists an impressive cast though Tim Curry needs a bigger role. Take a look:
I saw the shorter version during the series premiere of Universe and was intrigued. I’m even more so now. I like the idea of a more ‘take charge’ Alice and Kathy Bates as the Red Queen fits perfectly. It even looks like the mirror universe could be an ‘alternate’ universe instead of the fantasy setting from the book, which interests me as well. I’ll tune in.
Next up is Tim Burton’s big screen version. We’ve posted this before but here it is again:
Whoa Nelly! Burton is taking the classic story and infusing it with his trademark sumptuous visual aesthetic. His movie looks incredible and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter is spot on perfect. This is definitely a movie I’m interested in seeing, especially if it manages to show up on an Imax screen. Of course, the actual story could blow, but at the least the look should be amazing.
Comparing these two is somewhat unfair as Burton is obviously working with a budget orders of magnitude greater than what SyFy has. But, taking that into consideration, I think it’s smart of SyFy to change the story into a more modern setting, freeing up budget from SFX to be used for other things. It will be interesting to see how these different versions actually turn out.
