You all remember the Disney short, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, nestled inside the creamy musical goodness that is Fantasia. In it, Mickey Mouse plays the part of the apprentice who tries to use his magic powers to help him with his chores. Things don’t go so well and it’s all set to Paul Dukas’ wonderful music. What you wouldn’t expect is for this short to be the source material for a remake starring Nic Cage.
Here’s the trailer:
Although the scene from the original short is in the trailer (don’t blink) The Sorcerer’s Apprentice looks to be another in a long line of loud, noisy, explode-y, SFX riddled films that turn out to be hollow shells, all sizzle and no substance. Not surprisingly, Jerry Bruckheimer is involved, so expect to see video montages of the apprentice going about his work set to an annoying, thumping rock sound track.
I’m not sure what Disney was thinking here except that maybe, just maybe, they are expecting the Harry Potter fans to get interested. Based on this trailer, I’m not interested. The best thing about this movie, which is sadly lacking in the trailer, is the inclusion of Monica Belluci. If she can make The Matrix Reloaded worth watching, maybe she can do the same here…
