Paul Melko’s ‘The Walls of the Universe’ Optioned

Variety tells us that Aron Warner, producer of the Shrek films, has optioned Paul Melko’s The Walls of the Universe for his production company Strange Weather.

The book follows young John Rayburn, a farmer’s son, who is visited by his double (dubbed “John Prime”) who came from an alternate universe. John Prime hopes to make lots of money by introducing pop culture products into universes where they don’t exist. John Prime lets his namesake use the device that lets him travel between worlds, but “farmboy John” learns too late that the device is broken and he cannot return to his own universe.

Variety quotes Warner saying “We think it has a ton of potential to explore the idea of parallel universes in a personal way, like Back to the Future did with time travel.”

We’ll see. The Walls of the Universe was one of my best reads of 2009. It’s not hard to see how the book could translate to film.
