Show: The Big Bang Theory
Episode Title: The Boyfriend Complexity
Air Date: November 18th, 2010
Penny’s father (Keith Carradine) is in town and to get him off her back about her love life, she tells him that she’s back with the only boyfriend he has ever approved of: Leonard.
Warning: Spoilers abound…
The boys, unaware of Penny’s lie, start the night off talking about who might be the bravest person in the Marvel universe. Candidates include: whoever has to give She-Hulk a bikini wax, Captain America’s undocumented Mexican gardener, whoever uses the bathroom after The Thing or the doctor who gives Wolverine his prostate exam. As amusing as this discussion was (I vote the prostate doctor), it was also nice to see the normally DC heavy show take a Marvel turn for a change. (They were sorting boxes of comics that were all DC titles while having this talk, btw)
Leonard finds out about Penny’s deception when she plants a long, deep kiss on him, then begs him to go along with the lie and keep her dad in the dark and off her case. His reaction was pretty much the same reaction any nerd/geek is going to have when asked to pretend to be a hot girls boyfriend.
“You actually want me to deceive your father with some sort of sham play acting kissing cuz I’m good with that…”
He also wastes no time taking full advantage of the situation by kissing Penny every chance he gets.
Meanwhile, Raj and Howard are spending the night monitoring a space telescope. Howard invites his girlfriend Bernadette and hilarity ensues as Raj has to get drunk so he can talk to her. His plan is to get his best friend and his girlfriend to bond, which happens as they do impressions of Howard’s mother that are pretty spot on.
Leonard and Penny’s dad, Wyatt, also bond, much to Penny’s discomfort. Sheldon sees Leonard and Penny kissing and immediately begins to draft a new section of the roommate agreement devoted to Penny’s annoying personal habits. He stays up all night to complete it.
This episode had a lot of high points, a lot of laugh out loud moments – including one of the funniest kisses I’ve seen in awhile, and it wasn’t Penny and Leonard.
I admit it – I didn’t like this show when it first came on, but I gave it another go about six months in and I have not looked back. It gets funnier every episode.
