Alpha Young Writers’ Workshop Runs Auction for Scholarship Fund
The Alpha SF/F/H Workshop for Young Writers is running an online auction this January to raise money for its scholarship fund. Authors and editors including George R. R. Martin, Tamora Pierce, John Joseph Adams, Patrick Rothfuss, Elizabeth Bear, Bruce Holland Rogers, Leslie What, and Karen Healey have donated items such as ARCs, signed books, and professional critiques. Alumni of the workshop have also written and illustrated an anthology of flash fiction, which will be available in return for donations of any amount.
Alpha is aimed at enthusiastic, talented young writers who have a strong interest in genre fiction. During the ten days of the workshop, professional writers teach the craft of writing and the ins and outs of publication. Past guest authors have included Tamora Pierce, Holly Black, Ellen Kushner, Tobias Buckell, and Theodora Goss, among many others.
Many Alpha alumni have gone on to publish their short fiction in professional magazines and win prestigious awards, and two Alpha graduates, Mike Grinti and Rachel Grinti, have co-authored a middle grade novel due to be released in summer 2012. As Eileen Kern, a 2003 Alpha graduate, describes, “This workshop changes lives and produces young writers who are invested in the growth of speculative genres.”
While the staff does its best to keep tuition low, some potential students cannot afford to attend. Because Alpha is a nonprofit, it depends on the generosity of the speculative fiction community to provide need-based scholarships to these students.
The fundraiser will take place January 13-20. For more information, contact email@example.com or visit alphafundraiser.wordpress.com.
