Catching Up on SciFi Movies (Part 16): Super 8 / Never Let Me Go / Fright Night

Continuing a trend geared towards the Twitter generation, here are my quick takes on a few recently-watched genre-related films.

Quick thoughts follow…

  • Super 8 (2011) – Except for a few well-placed plot conveniences, this film was an excellent blend of SciFi mystery, drama and nostalgia.
  • Never Let Me Go (2010) – A fantastic mainstream-feeling film with a clear science fictional element, Never Let Me Go is an affecting, intelligent film whose dark mood stays with with you long after it ends.
  • Fright Night (2011) – I’m sure the 1985 original doesn’t measure up to my fond memory of it, but…yikes!…neither did this recent mediocre remake. Even David Tennant’s appearance as a Criss Angel-like stage performer — in a role seemingly designed to be the antithesis of a family-friendly Doctor Who — couldn’t redeem it.
