What’s special about today’s free fiction?

Chris Beckett has posted his chilling (perhaps an inappropriate word) short story set in a world of changing climate: “Rat Island”.
I realized that Nook users haven’t been given enough reason to hate me, thus: “Born Again at Granny’s Cave” on Nook.
Who doesn’t have Sanderson fever? I hear it’s ravaging parts of Central Ohio with no cure in sight. Tor has an excerpt of his latest novella, The Emperor’s Soul.
