Today at Kirkus Reviews: Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz

Over on the Kirkus Reviews Blog today, I have a post taking a look at Marvel’s recent adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz.

From the post:

Whimsical. That’s the word that came to mind as I made my way through this adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz, a 184 page trade paperback available from Marvel Comics.

Everyone knows the film version of Baum’s Oz starring Judy Garland, but I’ve come across few who are familiar with the original 14 books, plus all the other books that came after (something like forty at last count). I haven’t even read all of them, but when I saw that Marvel had started to adapt these works, I wanted to take a look – especially with the new movie, Oz: The Great and Powerful, coming to movie theaters here shortly.

  1. I’ve read most of them, the originals that were in the family as I grew up in the 1950s. I think the ones by Baum are the best, then those by Ruth Plumley Thompson, and they go downhill from there.
