Digging Deeper Into Chaos

by Gail Z. Martin

I like to take my fictional worlds apart and put them back together again, slowly and not in quite the same way they started.

In my Chronicles of the Necromancer and Fallen Kings Cycle series, my world of the Winter Kingdoms faced usurper kings, marauding armies, plague, drug-addled zombies, rogue vampires and undead predators. A peaceful and prosperous set of kingdoms are plunged into succession crises, war and chaos. That’s fertile ground for an adventure, and a time when heroes are sorely needed.

Now in the Ascendant Kingdoms Saga, a war that used mages as weapons of mass destruction triggered a doomsday response, plunging a continent into anarchy. In Ice Forged, disgraced lord Blaine McFadden learned that he might be the only one who could restore the magic. He returned from exile as a convicted murderer to save his homeland. But Donderath’s problems aren’t easily solved, and in the upcoming sequel, Reign of Ash, Blaine and his friends tackle a whole new set of challenges to bring back even a shadow of the kingdom’s former magic.

The stakes are higher, now that Blaine has seen the ravages brought on his homeland because of magic’s failure. The opponents are more determined, since they recognize the threat Blaine poses to their interests. Even some allies can’t be trusted, since their vision for the kingdom is more about gathering the spoils of war than putting the pieces back together to defend the kingdom.

My background is in history, and I’ve always been fascinated by the times when advanced civilizations have come crashing down due to natural or man-made disasters and then watching it rebuild in a different form. I love the resiliency of the human race, and the way society reshapes itself from the ashes. To me, it makes a fascinating sandbox for storytelling because the seeds of the next ascendance are sown in chaos and anarchy, and it’s fun to see what grows from the wreckage.
