Can You Name This Story? (Part 36)

Here’s another Name That Story challenge for our readers, sent in by someone looking for the title of a story read long ago.

Does anyone out there know the title to this story?

I have been trying to find a book I read more than 20 years ago and have had no luck. I was hoping you may be able to help me.

A military man, I think his rank is sergeant, his soul is teleported to another planet. He enters an aliens body and shares the aliens consciousness.

The alien is one of two races on the planet. I don’t remember any physical particulars about this alien except it has 2 antenna which end in these type of fluffy balls.

The other alien race on the planet has a lion’s head, walks upright.

Eventually the military man has his body transported to the planet and he is able to get his soul back into it.

He then fights the leader of the lion headed race in a challenge. The gravity of the planet is lighter than earth’s and because of this he has great strength. The fight culminates in him ripping the head off the lion alien.

Sounds a bit like /John Carter of Mars/. I last read it in the 1980’s though, so fuzzy on the details.

  2. Hmm. At first I thought I had no idea, then SurlyJackson suggested John Carter of Mars, which I don’t think is quite it, but it did put me in mind of Under the Green Star by famous Burroughs-imitator Lin Carter. Don’t remember the protagonist being a military man, however.
