If you’re anything like my kids, you have some extra cash in your pocket courtesy of various relatives and/or friends. You could save it and earn a couple of cents a month, or you could spend it on something interesting…like any of the following, for example!
You may have heard that Disney acquired the rights to a little movie franchise called Star Wars. Part of that deal included the rights for comics. What that means is that, as of January 1st, 2015, Dark Horse comics will no longer be able to produce comics based on Star Wars, only Disney will be able to. Their loss is your gain as Dark Horse is selling all Star Wars comics for 50% off through December 31st. They call it the Star Wars Farewell Sale. Everything you purchase in digital form will be placed in your Dark Horse locker and you will still have access to the comics after the new year. Dark Horse has a ton of comics covering a lot of the (soon to be non-canon) Expanded Universe. Some items of interest: The Star Wars, based on the rough-draft screenplay for Star Wars where Annikin Starkiller is the hero, Luke Skywalker is a wizened Jedi general and Han Solo is a big green alien. I bought all 12 issues. Or perhaps the Thrawn Trilogy or The Old Republic interests you? Take a look, there’s a lot of interesting stuff there.
Maybe your tastes tend toward old school pen and paper RPGs. Bundle of Holding always has something interesting going on and this week, they have two bundles that should be of particular interest to genre fans.
First up is the Paranoia bundle. This is the 2004 Mongoose Publishing edition of the classic 1980’s RPG of a dark, humorous future society ruled by the Computer. I remember playing this in high school with my friends and having fun with it. For $12.95 you get 5 titles, including the base RPG rulebook and some other stuff to get your game up and running. If you pony up $24 or more, you’ll also get seven more supplements to expand your gaming, including Flashbacks, which updates several original scenarios for this version of Paranoia. As of this writing, this bundle is good for the next 3 days.
Maybe you’re more interesting in a setting that is reminiscent of Jack Vance’s Dying Earth stories? If so, Monte Cook’s Numenera RPG bundle has you covered. Here’s a taste of the Numenera description:
Set in a far, far distant future, the Numenera RPG puts a new spin on traditional fantasy, creating something unique to reinvigorate the imagination of gamers everywhere. Player characters explore a world of mystery and danger to find leftover artifacts of the past: bits of nanotechnology, the datasphere threaded among still-orbiting satellites, bio-engineered creatures, and myriad strange and wondrous devices that defy understanding. Numenera is about discovering the wonders of the worlds that came before, not for their own sake, but as the means to improve the present and build a future.
Sounds interesting to me. Very interesting. So interesting that I purchased this full bundle, even though I had already bought the base rulebook several months ago from DriveThruRPG. For $9.95 you get the core rule book, the Cypher Collection (bits of lost tech to use in your campaign) and a GM screen. Bump your donation up to $21.20 or more and you’ll also get 6 more supplements, including the Player’s Guide, scenarios and more tech. As of this writing, there are 10 days left for this bundle.
Everything for Bundle of Holding comes in a PDF, and is downloadable from either the Bundle of Holding site or, in most cases, additionally from DriveThruRPG.
