First Look at the New “Supergirl” TV Show

Look, I like DC Comics. I was a DC Comics kid growing up. I love Gotham. But I tolerate Flash (I like the comic-related parts but cringe at the writing and awkward scene endings) and ignore Arrow. It seems that DC properties lack the gravitas of Marvel shows and movies. This long-ish peek at the new CBS series Supergirl is simply not doing much to change my mind.

What do you think?

Like all the DC shows since Smallville, it’s geared for the younger crowd. Gotham is the only show that has a dark feel to it although Arrow also comes close to that — especially the first season.

  2. Looks like fun to me. I’ll give it a shot.

    • Adding on a bit: The presence of Calista Flockhart (as Supergirl’s devil-in-prada boss) may be meant to evoke Ally McBeal, another show about a young woman trying to negotiate the social pitfalls of being newly adult. (One might even argue Ally McBeal also had powers beyond mortal men, in her skills as a lawyer.) Since I loved Ally McBeal, this is another thing to motivate me to watch Supergirl.

The flavor I get from the preview also reminds me of the excerpts I’ve seen from the new version of Batgirl, who has a social life beyond her crime-fighting.

  3. I think it looks pretty good. I’ve been getting tired of the dark superhero movies, so this and Flash are a nice change.

  4. Funnily enough, the reasons you dislike it are precisely why I like it. I don’t want my Super[genderterm] shows or movies to be dark and brooding. I want them to be inspirational and fun.
