Variety is reporting that actor/producer Bradley Cooper (American Sniper) will be teaming up with producers Graham King and Todd Phillips to produce a SyFy channel television “event” series based on Dan Simmons’ Hugo Award-winning epic space opera Hyperion. Boardwalk Empire screenwriter Itamar Moses will write the screenplay and serve as co-executive producer of the series.
Here’s how SyFy describes Hyperion:
Set on the eve of Armageddon with the entire galaxy at war, Hyperion is the story of seven pilgrims who set forth on a voyage to seek the answers to the unsolved riddles of their lives. Each carries a desperate hope and a terrible secret — while one may hold the fate of humanity in his hands.
Hyperion is considered a modern masterpiece of science fiction literature and is loved by many. The level of fan expectation is going to be set super high for this one, so SyFy will be under a lot of pressure to deliver. It doesn’t help that a past attempt failed to materialize. For his part, Bradley Cooper is quoted as saying, “It is an absolute honor to enter into the world created by Dan Simmons that is arguably one of the greatest works of science fiction, and help realize it for television audiences.” Acknowledgement of the work is a great start, let’s hope they deliver. And who knows? If it works, maybe they’ll mine the sequels The Fall of Hyperion, Endymion and The Rise of Endymion as well.
