The Iron Giant is one of my favorite science fiction films. Why? Well, besides telling a good story that still holds up 16 years later, besides having excellent animation, besides employing excellent world building through its depiction of 1950s paranoia…it’s just plain fun.
The Iron Giant is one the early works of director Brad Bird, who you now know through his other animated work (The Incredibles, Ratatouille). I think The Iron Giant is one of science fiction’s treasures and if you haven’t seen it, you may get the best chance of all. The film is coming back to the big screen for a limited release! The new version will include improved animation and additional scenes. (Get your tickets here.) The original theatrical run wasn’t all that spectacular in terms of ticket sales, but the film has since attained cult hit status and I hope this finds its way to new audiences.
Here’s the trailer for the remastered release.
Bonus: You get to hear Vin Diesel flexing his pre-Groot muscles.
