Pushing back against racism is a good thing. The stupidity of the World Fantasy Reward and Lovecraft is an example of a lot of noise and feelgood-ism signifying very little. Shall we go back and judge all literary figures, artists and composers based upon the criteria of today? Is sending all of them down the memory-hole going to solve real problems? Perhaps the problem of institutional racism is embodied in a white man sitting at the head of an organization like the World Fantasy Award. I don’t see him stepping down in favor of a black woman. Why not? Let’s have more than just a gesture.
