Sunday Cinema: Transatlantic Tunnel (1935)

Transatlantic Tunnel is a 1935 British science fiction film (released as The Tunnel) about the building of a transatlantic tunnel between New York and London. It was directed by Maurice Elvey and stars Richard Dix, Leslie Banks, Madge Evans, Helen Vinson, C. Aubrey Smith and Basil Sydney.

This film is based on the 1913 novel Der Tunnel by Bernhard Kellermann and is not to be confused with the 1972 alternate history novel A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah! written by Harry Harrison. Transatlantic Tunnel has other literary science fiction ties as well. The screenplay was co-written (along with L. du Garde Peach and Clemence Dane) by Curt Siodmak, author of the classic novel Donovan’s Brain (which I have to imagine is waaaaay better than “Spock’s Brain“.)

Enjoy the film!
