No self-respecting human should do anything other than exactly as they please. That goes double about adhering to the opinions of someone writing in a newspaper somewhere.
I’ll be honest,I’m not a fan of Batman or Superman, nor the superhero films, but whether or not I think comics are below the level of “self respecting adults”,is another matter. They are about so much more than plain superheroes, even Spider Man aka Peter Parker, whom I do admire as a character, even if it doesn’t work on the cinema screen.
He doesn’t seem to realise that superheroes and the comic book medium, aren’t married in any way. They aren’t one and the same, and have appeared in book form as well as films,be what they may. Also, like those two mediums, the’ve covered a rich range of genres and non-generic categories.
It also seems to have passed beneath his radar, that tv,that he seems to espouse as an arena for intellectuals,is nothing of the sort, because those people who watch those programmes he’s so enthusiastic about, aren’t neccessarilyinterested in books or comics. He’s really preaching to the converted I think.
It would be interesting to know what he thinks about SF,including the written genre.Perhaps it’s just as negative and uninformed,in which case, his artistic and literary outlook is truly jaded.
