SUNDAY CINEMA: Giant Robots from Venus Invade Chicago in “Target Earth” (1954)
Target Earth tells the story of a deserted Chicago and a small group of people who have been overlooked during a mass evacuation of “the city that never sleeps” because of a sudden invasion by hostile robotic beings from the planet Venus.
Target Earth was among the first SF films I saw growing up back in the 1950s. I tracked it down to see again decades later. It’s low-budget, but not too bad. As a kid, it was plenty scary. Of course, I remember the robots being cooler than they actual are.
The only recognizable actor for me – Whit Bissell – playing exactly the same character (military / scientist) as he did in every other movie and tv series he was in … well, it was a living I guess.
